| With the rapid growth in networking traffic and the utilization of server resources near their capacity, Enterprise IT departments and ISPs are confronted with a dilemma in providing applications and users the guaranteed bandwidth to meet the service levels that they have signed up for. For example, network administrators might need a way to define a policy to ensure that a large file or a business-critical traffic flow gets to its destination on time and without delay. Or, they may need to ensure that a real-time session such as voice or video over IP doesn't look choppy or out of sequence. |

| HP-UX IPQoS provides IETF DiffServ-compliant network quality of service controls for IP-based network communications. It provides a service provider the ability to define and guarantee predictable [service] classes and attributes for the services offered to its customers. HP-UX IPQoS allows network administrators to prioritize networking services and apportion bandwidth for network resources. HP-UX IPQoS does this by providing network administrators the capability to regulate and mark outbound network traffic based on the source or destination address (single address or range, in either IPv4 or IPv6 or both), port numbers (or ranges), destination physical address, DSCP, network or transport protocol number. HP-UX IPQoS is available for HP-UX 11i v1 and HP-UX 11i v2. This product can be obtained from the HP Software depot via a web download from http://www.hp.com/go/softwaredepot/. |

Control over network resources HP-UX IPQoS provides control over network resource usage. For example, you can give priority to voice or video traffic to minimize packet flow interruptions and avoid jitter, or avoid delays during communication over a large FTP file transfer. When HP-UX IPQoS is properly configured, you can ensure that your preferred applications (for example, time-sensitive multimedia or voice applications) receive a guaranteed minimum bandwidth of the network interface. The remaining bandwidth and any of the reserved bandwidth not utilized is available for other applications. API to customize HP-UX IPQoS to the user environment HP-UX IPQoS provides an API to supplement the standard configuration mechanism and administration utility available with the product. If you want to have your own custom application to access, control, and manage the IPQoS configuration data, then the API is an ideal solution. The API can also be used to obtain real-time IPQoS statistics. Transparent to user applications You can realize immediate benefits from HP-UX IPQoS because existing applications do not need to be changed in any way to take advantage of the benefits of HP-UX IPQoS. Built on industry standards Since HP-UX IPQoS was built on IETF standards, HP-UX IPQoS is interoperable with routers and switches operating throughout the Internet. HP-UX IPQoS is based upon the following IETF Standards: RFC2474 - Definition of the Differentiated Services Field (DS Field) in IPv4 and IPv6 Headers RFC2475 - An Architecture for Differentiated Services RFC2597 - Assured Forwarding PHB Group RFC2598 - An Expedited Forwarding PHB
