Executive update: news at a glance
HP-UX 11i news: powerful agility
Content starts here
For illustration, a retail customer with one million users: A retail customer explores alternative IT Infrastructure solutions to implement an LDAP directory for authorization and access control to the company's IT network. Access is by external customers and vendors. The retailer has revenue of $75M, 375 internal employees and one million external users. The current access control method is using a commercial database running on Sun Fire V440 servers.

Four alternative systems: The customer explores four system alternatives: (1) Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS) for HP-UX running on HP-UX 11i and Integrity RX 1620, (2) OpenLDAP directory running on Linux and ProLiant 32-bit servers, (3) Sun Directory running on Solaris and Sun Fire servers, and (4) Red Hat Directory for Linux running on Linux and ProLiant servers.

HP-UX 11i directory has lowest TCO: The total cost of ownership (TCO) for a five-year period shows the alternative (1) to be the most cost effective, Red Hat Directory for HP-UX running on HP-UX 11i and Integrity. The table below shows that the RHDS implementation under HP-UX 11i is from 17% to 48% less expensive on a five-year basis than the alternative LDAP directory implementations.

TCO comparision table

HP-UX 11i Intranet directory is free: In exploring this project further, the retail customer learns that the Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS) for HP-UX 11i is a component of the Foundation Operating Environment. The project can be undertaken in phases with the first phase implementing the LDAP directory for internal employee access. There is no cost to implement the directory for Intranet (employees and regular contractors). In addition, the support of the free implementation is included in the customer support agreement for HP-UX 11i. When Extranet users are supported, as in the case study shown above, then per processor charges and support charges are incurred for the directory application.

Project Internal Rate of Return is 97%

The customer further explores whether there is a payback to leaving the current Solaris/ database system shown as the "AS IS" in the report below. The change is to the HP-UX Directory System shown as the Solution B in the report below and (System 1) in the table above. By using ROIAnalyst, a third-party TCO/ROI tool made by Alinean the following results were obtained:

This table shows that the project produces an excellent internal rate of return of 97% when using a discount rate of 9.5%. Furthermore the net present value savings of $627, 797 may be obtained when discounting the total savings of $890, 771 over five years back to today.

The deepest dip in cash occurs in the initial period with an outlay of $194,562. This expense is recouped in 13 months and cash flows are positive through the end of the project.

The breakeven graph shows a payback period of 13 months.
